Beloaga gaztelua stands in the Gurutze neighborhood of Oiartzun, Gipuzkoa, perched on rock formations called Arkale at approximately 265 meters elevation. One of Gipuzkoa's most important preserved medieval castles, first documented around 1200 when King Alfonso VII of Castile claimed it from Navarre, the site exemplifies traditional Basque architecture harmonizing with its natural landscape. Medieval structures were modified during the Carlist Wars to serve as a liberal stronghold, with only ruins surviving to the present day. Located approximately 15 minutes' walk from the neighborhood, visitors can explore castle remains alongside a Roman-era gravestone replica and Civil War-era bunkers and barracks from 1936, providing multiple layers of regional history.
