Castillo del Águila is a historic fortress perched at 688 meters above sea level in Gaucín's Genal Valley, offering panoramic views across the landscape toward Gibraltar on clear days. Dating from Roman origins and reinforced by Moorish builders, the castle features an irregular double-defensive layout with three walled enclosures and commanding towers. With roots to medieval conflict—most notably the 1309 death of Guzmán el Bueno during an assault—this site today preserves substantial stone walls and towers climbed by visitors for expanded vistas. The complex includes a chapel dedicated to Santo Niño and Via Ferrata climbing routes, with seasonal hours accommodating both summer and winter visitors.
