Torre La Almenara crowns a steep mountainous peak at 1,000 meters altitude in Gata, Cáceres, defining the distinctive silhouette of the Sierra de Gata region. Built in the 14th century over remains of an earlier Arab fortress, this pentagonal tower constructed with stone and ashlar corners derives its name from the Arabic word for fortress. Won from the Moors by Alfonso IX of León in 1212, the tower subsequently passed to the Military Order of Alcántara for protection. The dramatic eight-kilometer hiking route from Gata's historic center to the tower passes through dense forests and reveals sweeping vistas encompassing the Sierra de Gata, reservoirs, valleys, and on clear days, distant Gredos peaks.
