Fuentes de Valdepero Castle, located in Palencia province, Castile and León, is intrinsically linked to significant moments in Spanish medieval and Renaissance history. Built by Don Diego Pérez Sarmiento between 1442 and 1465, the fortress succeeded earlier noble holdings traced to Pedro Ansúrez, the 11th-century founder of Valladolid. The castle endured dramatic events during the 1521 Wars of the Communities, when communeros led by Bishop Acuña captured and destroyed the fortress, resulting in the arrest of the Ribera family then holding it. The fortification features two substantial round towers, robust battlements, curtain walls and partially completed additional towers. The castle's architectural description in Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos' 1791 diary praised its 'beautiful' design, and today it welcomes visitors during designated hours.
