Castillo de Fatetar dominates a hillside overlooking the town of Espera and the Salado River in Cádiz province, with origins possibly tracing to Roman fortification. The castle was substantially rebuilt by Abderramán III around 914 during the Islamic period, then contested between Christian and Muslim forces in the 13th century before Christian conquest was finalized in 1264. Following donation to the church in 1539, the fortress was eventually abandoned though its chapel remained in use as the parish church until 1610. The castle suffered severe damage in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, underwent reconstruction during French occupation, and was later restored. In recent years, interior adaptations made in 2018 now allow the site to host spectacles and cultural events.
