Castell del Catllar in El Catllar, Tarragona, crowns a hill above the River Gaia, built upon layers of ancient occupation spanning from Iberian settlement in the 7th-5th centuries BCE through the medieval period. The primary fortified complex dates to the 13th century, with surviving features including partial walls adapted to terrain contours and two rectangular corner towers. Ownership passed through the Montoliu, Requesens, Olzinelles, and Queralt families across the medieval centuries before passing to the Counts of Santa Coloma from the 16th century. Following municipal acquisition in 2002, the castle underwent meticulous restoration and now offers guided tours, providing public access to its layered archaeological record and architectural features while preserving this significant marker of regional territorial organization.
