Castillo de Monreal dominates an isolated hilltop in Dosbarrios, Toledo, visually commanding the Valdecarábanos valley and eastern Manchego plains from its position on La Mesa de Ocaña. Its unusual triangular floor plan directly reflects adaptation to the rugged terrain, constructed in masonry and lime mortar with a semicircular tower on the eastern side and two barrel-vaulted chambers along the northern wall. Built as part of the Order of Santiago's defensive network following a 1203 donation by the Counts of Castile, the fortress served as a strategic encomienda controlling territory south of the Tagus River. Originally surrounded by a moat and thick defensive wall, the castle now stands in advanced ruins with only dispersed structures and wall sections remaining, preserving evidence of medieval frontier fortification strategies.
