Castillo de Clavijo dominates the landscape of La Rioja from atop an imposing rock outcrop, 15 kilometers from Logroño in the municipality of Clavijo. This fortress first appears in historical records in 960 when Fernán González was imprisoned within its walls, and later came under royal control when Sancho el Mayor of Navarra ceded it to the Albelda monastery. Its construction likely dates to the 9th century, with later modifications by the Zúñiga family in the 14th century. The castle survives with substantial remains including a cylindrical tower structure and stone masonry walls, though only portions are currently accessible. Local legend recalls an apparition of the Apostle St James during a medieval battle fought near the castle's walls.
