Castell de la Santa Creu de Calafell is a medieval fortified enclosure first documented in 1037, occupying a strategic hilltop that has been inhabited since Iberian and Roman times. The structure evolved from a simple peasant settlement with wooden defenses into a Gothic residential palace during the medieval period, with notable transformations in the 14th and 15th centuries including heightened walls and the construction of a castle prison. Following restoration efforts beginning in 1982, the site now operates as an archaeological park with open-air exhibition spaces that chronicle the municipality's layered history through restored exhibits and interpretive installations.
