Castle of Biar stands dramatically on a 750-meter hilltop overlooking the charming town of Biar in the Valencian Community, representing a masterpiece of medieval military architecture. Built by the Almohads in the mid-12th century, the fortress was conquered by James I the Conqueror in 1245 after a five-month siege and became an important border stronghold for the Kingdom of Valencia. The castle features a distinctive double enclosure with four semi-cylindrical corner towers and notably contains a ribbed vault on its first floor—the only surviving example of its kind in Spanish military architecture—making it both historically and architecturally significant.
