CASTLES BENAHAVÍS

Torre Esteril in Benahavís, Málaga, is a medieval defensive tower representing the Islamic territorial network that characterized the region during the Middle Ages. Originally of medieval construction, the tower's documented history spans from at least the 18th century. Located near the Los Arqueros golf course and close to the Ronda road, this architectural remnant stands as one of Benahavís's most representative vestiges of Islamic defense systems. Today the name also identifies a nearby upscale residential urbanization with over 1,000 properties developed between 2000 and 2010, blending historic heritage with modern development in the wealthy Costa del Sol region.

Torre de la Leonera, also known as Torre de la Lechera, stands in Torre Leonera Park at the heart of Benahavís, Málaga, representing one of five watchtowers built during the Nasrid period to defend Montemayor Castle. This tower-farmhouse features possible Almohad origins from the 12th-13th centuries with a square stone floor plan, crenellations, and an attached vaulted cistern accessed from the terrain's slope. Recently restored to its current prominence within the park, the structure is legally protected under Spanish historical heritage law. All five watchtowers appear on the town's coat of arms, with Torre de la Leonera serving as a focal point for understanding medieval Andalusian defensive architecture.
