Castell de Bàscara stands in the small town of Bàscara in Alt Empordà, Girona, with origins dating to 1241 when King James I authorized the bishop of Girona to erect fortifications. This medieval castle held strategic importance as a defensive position on the road from Girona to France. The fortress featured three towers in the 18th century, including a distinctive circular tower used as a prison. The structures visible today date from the 14th to 19th centuries. Damaged by French troops in the 19th century, the castle now exists as archaeological ruins that reflect its historic significance and turbulent past.
