Torre de Doncos, also known as the fortress of Santo Agostiño or Fortaleza da Grupa, rises from a hilltop at 620 meters elevation in As Nogais, Lugo, Galicia. This square tower of slate stone stands eight meters per side with three floors plus a basement carved into the rock, surrounded by remnants of a square enclosure and a cylindrical tower. Designated as a Cultural Asset of Interest in 1994, the fortress controlled the medieval passage from El Bierzo to Galicia along the ancient Roman road connecting Braga to Astorga. Built in the 15th century under García Rodríguez de Valcarce, the tower later passed through the hands of the Count of Ayala and Fernando de Toledo before suffering devastation during the French invasion and eventual abandonment to its current ruined state.
