Castillo de Arnedillo, also known as the Castillo Roquero, crowns a dramatic rocky outcrop north of Arnedillo on the right bank of the Cidacos River near the San Andrés bridge in La Rioja. Its origins trace to the 10th century when it controlled passage through territory not yet firmly in Christian hands, though the visible remains date from the 13th century. First documented in 1170, when King Alfonso VIII granted the town and fortress to the Bishop of Calahorra, the castle remained under ecclesiastical control until the abolition of lordships in the 19th century.
