CASTLES ARCOS DE JALÓN

Castillo de Arcos de Jalón sits strategically in Soria's Jalón river valley, controlling passage between the Castilian and Aragonese kingdoms. Constructed in the 14th century over earlier Arab foundations, this triangular-planned fortress features an eastern entrance adjacent to its keep tower, displaying the coats of arms of the influential Albornoz and Luna families. Its network of watchtowers and defensive installations made it essential for regulating transit through the Jalón gorge's natural passage. Owned successively by powerful noble families and eventually the Counts of Medinaceli, the castle achieved Protected Heritage status in 1949, preserving its significance as a crucial frontier stronghold in medieval Spain's dynastic landscape.

Castillo de Somaén commands a strategic position between Medinaceli and Arcos de Jalón in Soria, controlling the Jalón gorge pass between Castile and Aragón. With potential Arab origins dating to around 1100, its definitive construction occurred between 1340 and 1400 under Bernal Bearne, the first Count of Medinaceli, creating a fortress featuring 11th-century construction and 18th-century additions. After periods of state ownership, a 1976 public auction transformed the castle into a luxury rural hotel, preserving its thick ashlar walls, original gates, and wooden beams while adding modern amenities including restaurant, bar, and seasonal pool. Today it functions as both heritage landmark and hospitality venue, maintaining its architectural character while serving contemporary visitors.

Torre de Chaorna in Arcos de Jalón, Soria, rises from a rocky outcrop above the Cueva de la Mora near the Church of San Miguel. This 11th-century tower reflects Muslim architectural design and heritage, originating from the frontier period between Al-Ándalus and Christian kingdoms. The structure features a rectangular floor plan measuring 5 by 6 metres with walls exceeding one metre in thickness, built of solid masonry. Later falling under the control of the Dukes of Medinaceli, the tower underwent comprehensive restoration work completed at considerable expense, ensuring its preservation for future generations as an important reminder of the region's multicultural medieval past.
