Castillo de Alhama is an Islamic-origin fortress of the 12th and 13th centuries positioned on a steep hill commanding the Guadalentín Valley between the kingdoms of Granada and Aragon, serving strategic defensive and border control functions during Al-Andalus. The castle divides into two distinct zones: military and political spaces alongside residential quarters for the population, with the prominent Torre del Homenaje (Homage Tower) showcasing interior decorative paintings. Declared a cultural heritage asset in 1985, the fortress underwent comprehensive restoration completed in 2024, with further musealisation work planned for 2025 to enhance visitor experiences and historical interpretation.
