Calatrava la Nueva, an outstanding Gothic castle-convent complex, rises majestically from the peak of Alacranejo in Aldea del Rey, Ciudad Real, covering more than 45,000 square meters. Founded in 1217 when the Order of Calatrava relocated from Calatrava la Vieja, the fortress strategically dominated the Calatrava Pass, a crucial natural route through Sierra Morena. The complex features remarkable Gothic architecture including an outstanding rose window in its church, three walled enclosures with the southern Puerta del Sol gate, and represents one of Europe's most important rock castles.
