Alcalá de la Selva Castle, known as Castillo de los Heredia, crowns the town of Alcalá de la Selva in Teruel's Gúdar-Javalambre region. Though originally Muslim in origin, the castle emerged into documented history in 1118 when Alfonso I of Aragón donated it, beginning centuries of transfers between Christian and Muslim hands before its permanent reconquest in 1174. The Fernández de Heredia family later acquired it in 1375 as an occasional residence. Today, visitors can explore the restored church and ascend to the castle for commanding views across the surrounding landscape and excellent opportunities for griffon vulture observation.
