CASTLES ALARCÓN

Puerta de Chinchilla is a 15th-century fortified gateway in Alarcón, Cuenca, serving as the southern entrance to the medieval walled town. Featuring a distinctive composition of semicircular and depressed arches constructed from precisely-cut ashlars, the gate exemplifies Gothic defensive architecture refined during Juan Pacheco's renovations as Marquis of Villena. This independent access structure connected Alarcón with Chinchilla de Monte Aragón to the south, facilitating commerce while maintaining defensive integrity. As one of six surviving gates from an original seven, the Puerta de Chinchilla provides critical evidence of Alarcón's medieval urban layout and remains an atmospheric passage through centuries of history.

Torre de los Alarconcillos rises majestically from a hillside within a 15-degree curve of the Júcar River near Alarcón in Cuenca's Castile-La Mancha region. This medieval tower features a distinctive circular central tower with four smaller round towers attached, crowned by an even taller central spire. The structure showcases impressive medieval military architecture and overlooks the surrounding landscape and Huécar River. Accessible by a short 10-15 minute walk from the town centre, the tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of the medieval town below and the picturesque Jucar meanders.

Torre de Cañavate is a medieval pentagonal tower rising from a spur above the Júcar River in the hilltop town of Alarcón, Cuenca, Spain. Originally built to defend against potential attacks on the narrow isthmus between Alarcón and the Alarconcillo tower, the structure features a crenellated design and a coracha (defensive wall) exceeding a meter in thickness. Though the door has disappeared and sections of the curtain wall have deteriorated, the tower remains standing and accessible via a 20- to 25-minute walk from the town center, offering views of the medieval settlement, surrounding river gorge, and landscape.

Alarcón Castle is a remarkably well-preserved fortress in Cuenca, Spain, with over 13 centuries of architectural evolution spanning pre-Roman, Moorish, and Christian periods. Perched atop Pico de los Hidalgos, the castle commands views of the Júcar River gorge and features three original fortification lines, a central courtyard with an ancient cistern, and a Renaissance-era tower of homage displaying Gothic styling.
