Castillo de Aguilar de la Frontera, also known as Castillo Poley or Castillo Pontón, crowns a strategic hilltop in Aguilar, Córdoba. First documented in the 9th century, the fortress served as a crucial defense line under the rebel Omar Ibn Hafsún before his defeat in 891. The site evolved through subsequent Christian rule following Ferdinand III's 1240 conquest, with medieval modifications continuing through the 14th century. Today, the castle hill remains one of Andalusia's most important archaeological sites, with scattered surface materials spanning Neolithic through Islamic periods, though the fortress itself exists largely in ruins due to modern conversion into a municipal water cistern.
