Raphoe Castle, also known as the Bishop's Palace, is a ruined early 17th-century fortress built in the 1630s on the edge of Raphoe, County Donegal, for Dr John Leslie, Church of Ireland Lord Bishop of Raphoe. The structure was constructed from stone salvaged from a nearby ruined round tower. During the Irish Confederate Wars, Bishop Leslie earned the nickname 'Fighting Bishop' for his royalist stance against both Irish and Cromwellian forces. The castle witnessed multiple sieges—during the 1641 Irish Rebellion, by Cromwell's forces in 1650, and by Williamite supporters in 1689. The structure was ultimately destroyed in an accidental fire in 1838, leaving only ruins of this significant religious and military stronghold.
