Donegal Castle, constructed in the 15th century by Red Hugh O'Donnell, stands prominently in the heart of Donegal town overlooking the River Eske as one of Ireland's most splendid Gaelic fortresses. After O'Donnell's departure to Spain following the Battle of Kinsale, English captain Sir Basil Brooke acquired the castle in 1616 and added a manor house with ornate decorative elements including a carved chimney-piece. Following deterioration through the 20th century, the castle underwent comprehensive restoration in the 1990s and now operates as a Heritage Ireland site. Visitors can explore the medieval tower, 17th-century manor house, period rooms with spiral staircases, and exhibition displays chronicling the castle's complex ownership history. Daily admission is available with guided tours and facilities.
