Killua Castle is a three-storey castellated Gothic Revival castle built around 1780 in Clonmellon, County Westmeath, and described as one of Ireland's most romantic demesnes. The ancestral seat of the Chapman family, who received lands at Killua in 1667 as payment for services during the Cromwellian period, the castle may have been designed by renowned architect Thomas Cooley. The heavily wooded parkland landscape features a scenic lake and numerous follies creating a picturesque setting. Killua holds notable historical connections to figures including Sir Walter Raleigh and Lawrence of Arabia, whose father was a Chapman family member. Gutted around 1950 and left as a dramatic ruin for decades, the castle was purchased by a private owner in 2010 and is undergoing major restoration efforts to revive this significant architectural heritage site.
