Athlone Castle, also known as Adamson Castle, stands as a pivotal strategic fortress on Ireland's River Shannon in County Westmeath. Originally built in 1210 by King John of England, the stone castle features a central keep surrounded by a late 13th-century curtain wall with round towers, designed to control the crucial River Shannon crossing. The castle gained historical prominence as the center of the Great Siege of Athlone in 1690–1691 during the Williamite Wars. Reopened in 2012 after extensive renovation, the visitor center offers immersive exhibitions exploring early Irish settlements, warring chieftains, and the dramatic siege history. The castle grounds include interactive displays, costume dress-up activities, and historical gardens. Temporarily closed for redevelopment, it anticipates reopening in autumn 2026.
