Askeaton Castle, established in 1199 by Norman knight William de Burgo on a dramatic rock formation in the River Deel, served as the strategic stronghold of the earls of Desmond from 1348 onward. This medieval fortress features one of Ireland's finest banqueting halls and retains exquisite architectural details including fine windows and a remarkable medieval fireplace. Located in County Limerick near Adare, the ruins convey both the military might and cultural refinement of medieval Irish lordship, though the site currently remains closed to public access and can only be viewed externally.
