Ardee Castle, also known as St. Leger's Castle, is the largest fortified medieval tower house in Ireland or Britain, dominating the County Louth landscape since the 15th century when John St. Leger constructed it to defend the Pale. Originally established on a Norman foundation dating to 1207 by Roger de Peppard, the castle witnessed dramatic history including occupation by Irish forces in 1641 and service as headquarters for King James II before the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. Subsequently converted into a courthouse and prison in the 19th century, the castle served judicial functions for nearly two centuries, making it a multifaceted monument to Ireland's complex medieval and early modern history.
