Château de Caussade stands on a plateau in Trélissac near Périgueux, a 12th-century fortress founded by Guillaume de Calzado to protect the crucial Limoges–Périgueux axis dominating the Isle valley. The 15th-century structure presents a polygonal fortification with four flanking square towers, one containing the principal residence within the former keep's footprint. The fortress served as a World War I detention center for German officers and later sheltered resistance fighters during World War II. Listed as a Historic Monument, the castle's interior remains privately owned, though visitors can explore its exterior architecture and the scenic 17-kilometre Caussade loop hiking trail through the surrounding forest.
