Château Royal de Saint-Saturnin is an imposing 13th-century fortified castle built by the La Tour d'Auvergne family at the summit of a fortified village in Puy-de-Dôme, 11 miles from Clermont-Ferrand. The fortress was beautified during the Renaissance and became a royal residence, later belonging to queens Catherine de Medici and Marguerite de Valois before being gifted to King Louis XIII. Its strategic position on a lava flow overlooking a ravine, combined with crenellated and machicolated towers, ramparts, parapets, and dry moats, exemplifies medieval military architecture. Now designated a historic monument following recent restoration, the château operates as an exclusive bed and breakfast with rooms nestled in towers and currently hosts events and receptions with capacity for up to 150 dinner guests in the Royal Hall.
