Château de la Mothe-Gajac is a 15th-century fortified castle in Saint-Médard-en-Jalles near Bordeaux, built on an ancient motte site first documented in 1289. This quadrilateral-shaped fortress features four corner towers—three circular and one square tower housing the chapel—surrounding a central courtyard. The château's notable history includes ownership by the Montaigne family from 1544, who left their mark on this regional landmark. Restored and updated by various noble families through the 18th and 19th centuries, it exemplifies the defensive architecture that survived the Hundred Years' War. Now privately owned and protected as a Historic Monument since 2013, the castle remains one of the few preserved fortified residences in the Bordeaux region.
