Château de Pierrefonds, a magnificent fortress in the Compiègne Forest of Oise, represents a dramatic tale of destruction and visionary restoration. Built in the 12th century and partially destroyed in 1617 by Cardinal Richelieu, it was commissioned for restoration by Napoleon III in 1857 to architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, known for his work on Notre-Dame de Paris. Rather than faithful reconstruction, Viollet-le-Duc created an idealized vision of medieval architecture blending historical elements with creative interpretation, resulting in a spectacular castle whose dramatic architecture has become a sought-after filming location.
