Château d'Ormesson is located in Ormesson-sur-Marne, Val-de-Marne, in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, approximately 16 kilometres from the city centre. Built beginning in 1578 at the initiative of Louis Picot, lord of Santeny, the château was enlarged in the 18th century when it became the property of the Lefèvre d'Ormesson family. Distinguished by its clear moats stocked with fish and its park organized around axial perspective extending to a horseshoe-shaped lawn designed in the manner of Le Nôtre, the castle exemplifies 16th and 18th century French architectural traditions. Classified as a historical monument in 1889 and again by decree in 1993, it currently houses France's largest private archive collection and holds significance in French literary tradition.
