Donjon de Niort, a medieval keep located in the heart of Niort, spans 1,000 years of regional history within its impressive stone walls. Now operating as the Musée du Donjon, the fortress showcases permanent ethnographic and archaeological collections that reveal the cultural heritage of the Poitevine region, with materials housed in its historic rafters. An observation terrace offers panoramic views with orientation tables guiding visitors across the landscape. The museum remains open during ongoing renovation work, with the North tower terrace recently reopened for exploration. Hours vary seasonally (May-August: Tues-Fri 10am–1pm, 2–6pm; Sept-April: Tues-Fri 10am–1pm, 2–5pm). Closed Mondays and select holidays, visitors can reserve tickets through the online ticketing system.
