Château de Joux is a historic fortress spanning over a thousand years of history, strategically positioned on a rocky outcrop in the Jura mountains near Pontarlier, five kilometres from the Swiss border. The castle dominates the narrow passage of the Cluse, a natural gateway crossing the Jura Massif, and holds significant military importance in French history. Most notably, it was the place of detention of Toussaint Louverture, the formerly enslaved general who became governor of Haiti. Currently operating under a 2020-2030 restoration initiative, it offers guided tours, family activities, cultural events, educational programs, and nature activities daily from 10:00 to 18:00.
