CASTLES COGNAC

The Royal Castle of Cognac, known as Château de Cognac, is a historic fortress dating to the 10th-11th centuries and the birthplace of King Francis I of France. Located in southwestern France, the castle features impressive Gothic and Renaissance architecture and has served multiple purposes throughout its history. In 1795, Baron Otard preserved the structure from destruction by establishing his renowned cognac business within its walls, transforming it into both a museum and working distillery. Visitors today can explore cellar tours, taste fine cognacs, and enjoy the castle's beautiful gardens overlooking the scenic Charente River.

Château de Bagnolet is a distinctive colonial-style estate built in 1810 on the banks of the Charente in Cognac. The château features a square central pavilion flanked by two smaller pavilions with white walls inspired by Louisiana plantation architecture. Acquired in 1841 by Auguste Hennessy, the estate became intimately connected with the renowned Hennessy cognac house and has hosted distinguished guests since the 1960s. The grounds showcase an English-style park with winding paths, a winter garden housing collections of exotic plants, an arboretum, pergolas, and ornamental structures, though public access remains limited to occasional openings.
