Castle Cherveux is an imposing medieval fortress dominating the village of Cherveux in the Deux-Sèvres, north of Niort. The castle's original 12th–14th century structure was substantially rebuilt around 1470 by Scottish nobleman Robert Cunningham following his marriage to Louise Chenin, earning it the nickname 'Scottish castle in France.' Flanked by a substantial donjon and various towers arranged around a five-sided courtyard, the fortress is defended by a moated stone bridge with three arches. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1929 and privately owned since 1931, it remains accessible for guided tours and represents a unique Franco-Scottish architectural heritage.
