CASTLES CANTAL

Château de Saint-Cirgues-de-Malbert crowns a wooded rocky spur at 600 meters altitude in Saint-Cirgues-de-Malbert, Cantal, overlooking an 11th-century Romanesque church. Built in 1690 by François de Chaumeil and his father Jacques, who had exchanged the castle of La Roche-Loupiac for these lands, the three-story rectangular main building features corner turrets with crenellations and machicolations. The complex includes long stable and barn buildings, a bakehouse with original oven, and landscaped gardens. Successive ownership by major Auvergne families such as D'Albars, De Pestels, and D'Anjony preceded its abandonment in the early 20th century. Since 2017, an association has undertaken restoration using traditional techniques and participatory worksites.

Château de Vieillevie is a medieval fortress in the commune of Vieillevie, Cantal, dating from the 11th century with significant modifications during the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle features a rectangular main building with circular towers at the southwest and northwest corners, and is distinguished by Renaissance mullioned windows and monumental 13th-century fireplaces among the oldest surviving examples in France. Situated in the Lot Valley at the border between Cantal and Aveyron, the castle occupies a small rocky hill near the village center, with lower rooms carved directly into the rock. The château-fort's proximity to the magnificent abbey of Conques enhances its cultural significance. Theatrical afternoon visits are offered during summer months, with specialized storytelling tours in French presented on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 5 p.m., providing immersive engagement with medieval history.

Château d'Auzers exemplifies Renaissance refinement in rural Auvergne, having been rebuilt between 1470 and 1510 on a 14th-century foundation. The castle's impressive architecture features a rectangular main building flanked by two large towers and corner watchtowers, maintaining its medieval character through thoughtful restoration. Occupied by the same family since the 15th century, the château impresses with richly appointed interiors including Regency-style reception rooms, a vaulted hall with Auvergnat furnishings, monumental fireplaces adorned with detailed tilework, and a remarkable Empire-style collection gifted by Napoleon. Located twenty kilometres from Mauriac and Riom-ès-Montagnes in the peaceful countryside, this castle stands among the most beautiful in the Cantal department.

Château de Miremont crowns a basaltic plateau in Chalvignac, Cantal, commanding a strategic position overlooking the confluence of the Labiou and Dordogne rivers at 640 metres elevation. This ruined medieval fortress exemplifies defensive architecture with its masonry rampart, counter-escarp ditch, drawbridge mechanism, and commanding dungeon. The castle's historical significance spans centuries of conflict: besieged in 1105 by the bishop of Clermont over patronage disputes, captured in 1357 during the Hundred Years' War by English captain Robert Knoll, and fiercely resisted during the Wars of Religion in 1574. Inscribed as a historic monument in 1973, the castle's imposing remains evoke the turbulent medieval past of this strategically vital Auvergne fortress.
