Château de Barbezieux, located in Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire in Charente, dates to 1453, commissioned by Marguerite de La Rochefoucauld as a famine-relief employment project. The castle sits on a site previously occupied by an 11th-century fortress. Over centuries, Château de Barbezieux has been owned by distinguished French families including Barbezieux, Richelieu, and Le Tellier, and served diverse purposes as a prison, girls' school, and hospital. Listed as a French historical monument since 1913, its imposing round towers, though partially demolished in the 19th century, continue to dominate the local landscape. Today the castle houses the town's tourist office, a theatre, and a small local archaeology museum, maintaining its role as a cultural and administrative centre.
