Olavinlinna, or Saint Olaf's Castle, is the northernmost medieval fortress still standing and one of Finland's best-preserved stone castles, built on a rocky island in the Kyrönsalmi stream in Savonlinna. Founded in 1475 by Danish knight Erik Axelsson Tott to defend the strategically important Savo region against Russian attacks, the castle features a distinctive three-towered keep completed in 1485 and curtain walls finished by 1495. Today it is Finland's most iconic venue for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, established in 1967, and welcomes visitors year-round with exhibitions, guided tours, a museum shop, and café while hosting family activities and castle performances.
