CASTLES LOVISA

Malmgård Manor in Lovisa is a distinctive Renaissance-style castle built between 1882 and 1885 by architect F.A. Sjöström, representing a rare example of northern French renaissance architecture in Finland. The two-story structure features unrendered brick construction and impressive interiors decorated in various historical styles, highlighted by a sumptuous first-floor ballroom with ornate wall and ceiling paintings. The manor has belonged to the noble Creutz family for over 400 years, with the current host, Count Henrik Creutz, representing the 13th generation of ownership. Today the estate specializes in organic farming and artisanal brewing, with the manor shop offering the estate's own craft beers and organic food products, along with selections from other regional producers. Visitors can tour the manor through guided visits led by the count himself.

Bastion Ungern is an 18th-century stone fortification located in central Loviisa, representing part of the town's planned fortress system that was never fully realized. Construction began in 1748 under the leadership of Augustin Ehrensvärd, the same renowned Swedish military engineer who designed Suomenlinna fortress near Helsinki. The bastion was named after General von Ungern, and forms a pair with the Rosen Bastion positioned on opposite sides of the King's Road through the town. Though the original fortification plan envisioned surrounding the entire city, only the Rosen and Ungern bastions with their associated earthworks were substantially completed. Today Bastion Ungern remains in better condition than its counterpart, freely accessible year-round to visitors interested in Loviisa's military history and 18th-century fortification architecture.

Loviisa Land Fortress is an 18th-century earthen fortification located in Loviisa, Finland, constructed beginning in 1748. Built to defend Sweden's eastern border, this six-bastioned fortress features design elements named after members of the royal family. The fortress was completed under King Gustav III's mandate in 1775 and represents a well-preserved example of Scandinavian military architecture.
