Häme Castle is a medieval fortress built in the late 13th century in Hämeenlinna to serve as a military base in the border zone between Sweden and Novgorod, located on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi in the city center. Originally sited on an island, the castle comprises a central keep and surrounding curtain walls with a moat, though only two of its original five towers remain standing today. Governed by influential Swedish noble families including the Tott, Sture, and Posse, the fortress has functioned as military headquarters, noble residence, and prison throughout its history. Now Scandinavia's most well-preserved stone castle and operated as a museum by Finland's National Museum, it hosts medieval fairs and events while remaining open year-round as a leading southern Finland tourist attraction.
