CASTLES VILJANDI COUNTY

Viljandi Castle Ruins represent one of Estonia's most distinguished medieval fortifications, built by the Livonian Order beginning in 1224 on the site of an earlier hill fort. The fortress achieved its final substantial form by the early 16th century, becoming one of the most significant strongholds in the region before suffering destruction during the Polish-Swedish wars of the early 17th century. Today, the ruins form the centrepiece of a popular parkland resort just outside central Viljandi, with an open-air stage occupying the former central courtyard and a rope bridge spanning the 13-metre-deep trench connecting the castle hills to town since 1931. The site offers panoramic views of Lake Viljandi and surrounding countryside, serving as both a historical monument and venue for cultural events and festivals throughout the year.

Lõhavere Lembitu linnamägi is an ancient Estonian hill fort in Viljandi County, named after the legendary chieftain Lembitu who occupied the stronghold during the Late Iron Age. Founded at the end of the 12th century, the fort was built on a moraine hill rising 8-10 metres above the terrain, featuring a man-made sand wall originally reinforced by a 2.5-metre timber palisade and protective wooden structures. One of Estonia's most thoroughly studied archaeological sites, nearly two-thirds of the stronghold has been excavated since major investigations began in the late 19th century. Today the site stands as a registered state archaeological monument and recreation area.

Karkski Order Castle Ruins represent a significant medieval hill fortress in Viljandi County, originally established on the site of an ancient Estonian stronghold. Though a wooden stronghold existed at the location from at least 1248 during the Livonian Crusade, major stone construction commenced in the 13th century, with surviving structures dating to the 14th and 15th centuries. The fortress fell to Lithuanian forces in 1297–1298, and despite later rebuilding efforts, was ultimately destroyed during the Livonian War, becoming irreversibly ruined during the Great Northern War. Today, portions of the southwest side walls and sections near the moat remain visible, while the leaning tower of a Baroque church built within the ruins in the 1770s creates a striking architectural juxtaposition of medieval military and religious structures.
