Maasilinna Castle, established in 1345 by Livonian Order Landmeister Burchard von Dreileben on the island of Saaremaa, served as the medieval administrative center for eastern Saaremaa and Muhu. Originally constructed from wood following the suppression of the St. George's Night Uprising, the fortress was quickly reconstructed in stone to provide lasting defensive capabilities. The castle was devastated twice during the Livonian War and ultimately destroyed by Danish forces on August 11, 1576, remaining in ruins thereafter. Despite its ruined condition, the site preserves impressive limestone vaults that span approximately eight centuries, and the restored basement with automated illumination showcases the structural sophistication of medieval military architecture. Visitors may explore the ruins free of charge, making this significant historical site accessible to all interested in medieval Baltic history.
