Vasknarva Ordulinnuse, or Vasknarva stronghold, was strategically positioned on the banks of the Narva River in Alutaguse Parish, Ida-Viru County, serving as a crucial defensive fortification and trade centre for the Livonian Order. The first stronghold was constructed in 1349 but was destroyed that same year by forces from Pskov; a new fortress was erected beginning in 1427 and served as the bailiff's residence. The stronghold suffered destruction during the Livonian War and remained in ruins throughout the Great Northern War, never to be rebuilt. Today, the 3-metre-thick walls stand as silent testimony to centuries of Baltic regional conflict and the Livonian Order's ambitious programme of eastern fortification, providing visitors with direct evidence of medieval military architecture and construction capabilities.
