Alatskivi Castle stands as a striking Neo-Gothic mansion in Estonia's Tartu County, located 40 kilometers north of Tartu and modeled after Scotland's royal Balmoral residence. Originally dating to the 17th century, the castle was comprehensively rebuilt in the late 19th century by Arved von Nolcken, featuring an asymmetrical architectural plan with single- and double-storied wings, decorative turrets, and slate roofing characteristic of Scottish baronial design. Set within a forested park spanning 130 hectares on the high bank of Lake Alatskivi at the valley's foot, the castle underwent comprehensive renovation between 2005 and 2011. Today, five rooms on the first floor house the Eduard Tubin museum, documenting the life and accomplishments of the Estonian composer and conductor. Visitors can explore 19th-century noble family life through period displays and wax figures representing household servants, offering immersive historical perspective.
