CASTLES SVENDBORG

Valdemars Slot, built between 1639 and 1644 by King Christian IV on the island of Tåsinge near Svendborg, represents Denmark's largest private residence and the only former royal palace in private hands. Designed by architect Hans van Steenwinckel d.y., this grand 17th-century manor sits between forest, beach, and sheltered coastal lagoon, historically home to naval hero Niels Juel. Open to the public since 1974, Valdemars Slot features historic interiors, contemporary art exhibitions, a chapel, toy museum, and the Iuel-Brockdorff family's maritime museum and trophy collection. Public footpaths traverse its scenic woodlands and coastline, and the castle operates May through early autumn, accessible from Svendborg via the historic veteran ferry Helge.

Hesselagergård, nestled near Gudme in southeast Funen, stands as Denmark's oldest Renaissance building and a testament to the nation's architectural evolution. Documented as early Crown land in the 13th century before passing to the Bild family in 1419, the estate underwent radical Renaissance transformation between 1538–1550 under the direction of Johan Friis, one of Denmark's most influential Renaissance figures, likely under the architectural guidance of Martin Bussert. The residence of the Danish line of the Barons of Blixen-Finecke remains privately inhabited by family descendants today, with notable historical significance marked by Hans Christian Andersen's visit in June 1850, though the castle itself remains closed to public access.
