CASTLES NAKSKOV

Halsted Priory is a manor house and estate near Nakskov on Lolland with roots in a 12th-century Benedictine monastery, recognized by papal authority in 1177. The whitewashed main house and medieval church formed a pilgrimage site for venerating Saint Samson the Breton, attracting both commoners and royalty. After suffering Hanseatic League raids in 1510 and closure during the 1530s Reformation, it gradually transformed from religious house to secular noble manor. Still owned by the Krag-Juel-Vind-Frijs family, the estate's whitewashed architecture, medieval church, and landscaped park create a tranquil rural setting, offering visitors a tangible connection to Denmark's monastic past and aristocratic continuity.
