Gavnø Castle, set majestically on a small island in Karrebæk Fjord near Næstved, exemplifies rococo refinement within an enchanting 8-hectare flower-filled park environment. Originally a medieval fortress from the 12th century that evolved into a priory for noblewomen in the 15th century under Queen Margaret I, the castle underwent comprehensive renovation in 1737 when Count Otto Thott acquired it, creating the distinctive three-winged, yellow-facaded rococo building that dominates today's landscape. The castle houses Scandinavia's largest privately owned art collection featuring approximately 1,000 paintings including some of Northern Europe's oldest preserved portraits from around 1460, alongside a richly decorated former convent church.
