Gurre Castle represents one of North Zealand's most significant medieval ruins, situated on the outskirts of Helsingør near the town of Tikøb overlooking Lake Gurre Sø. Originally constructed in the 12th century as a royal fortress, the castle features four towers and a perimeter wall added in the 1350s, with materials from its ruins later repurposed in the construction of nearby Kronborg Castle. The site holds profound cultural significance in Danish heritage, immortalized through the legend of King Valdemar Atterdag—who died here in 1375—and his love for Tove Lille, a saga that inspired Arnold Schoenberg's grand cantata Gurre-Lieder and became a cornerstone of Danish national mythology.
