Aalholm Slot, located on the island of Lolland in Denmark's Guldborgsund Municipality, is one of Lolland's oldest castles, first documented in 1329. Originally constructed around 1200 as a center of royal governance, this moated fortress stands on a former island in Nysted Nor inlet, its strategic position surrounded by water providing historic protection. The castle features robust towers and red brick architecture characteristic of Danish medieval design, with major restructuring during the 18th and 19th centuries, notably under Hans Jørgen Holm and architect Gotfred Tvede in 1889, creating the fairytale appearance that defines this estate today.
