Augustenborg Palace, located on Als Island in Sønderborg Municipality, represents a Baroque architectural masterpiece built between 1770 and 1776 by Ernest Günther, the first Duke of Augustenborg. The symmetrical three-winged structure exemplifies full Baroque design principles and overlooks the scenic Augustenborg Fjord. Originally named after Duchess Auguste, the palace became the namesake for the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg. Though the building now houses the Danish Agency for Agriculture with restricted public access, visitors can explore the dedicated palace church during special opening hours and visit the Augustenborg Palace Mini Museum, housed in a bell tower room, which documents the history of the ducal family that once resided here.
